My life changed the summer of 1974 after reading the 1933 novel “Pilgrim’s Regress” by British writer, literary scholar, and Anglican theologian C. S. Lewis.
It is an updated version of John Bunyan’s 1676 “Pilgrim’s Progress”.“The story is delivered under the similitude of a dream” detailing the travels of the protagonist John and concerns a boy growing up in a Christian culture. The culture required certain behavior but did not explain his desires and moral failures.John endures a multitude of intellectual and spiritual struggles that force him to choose a direction. He fights various enemies representing extreme liberality and extreme legalism.Throughout the book John encounters characters representing various philosophical positions. Lewis’s character is asking questions which concerned me at the time and like me, John ultimately recognizes certain truths and commits his life to the “Landlord”.
The underlying theme is John’s desire for truth and beauty which propel him throughout his journey. The “Pilgrim Regress” drawings are a result of personal imagery intersecting with Lewis’ narrative not a mere illustration of the text. Each of the seven drawings portray multiple chapters and include many personal references.
